Birth Weight and Type 2 Diabetes in Adults

JAMA. 2009;301(15):1539-1541. doi:10.1001/jama.2009.485

To the Editor: In their systematic review and meta-analysis, Dr Whincup and colleagues1 examined the association of birth weight and type 2 diabetes in adults. They found that in most of the middle-aged and older populations studied in their review, there were inverse, graded, and independent associations between birth weight and risk of type 2 diabetes. These associations were not dependent on adjustment for current body size nor confounded by adult socioeconomic status, although in most of the studies this association has been attributed to a programmed response to intrauterine malnutrition.
