Life Without Disease: The Pursuit of Medical Utopia, by William B. Schwartz, 178 pp, with illus, $22, ISBN 0-520-21467-6, Berkeley, Calif, University of California Press, 1998
The title of this concise book leads the reader to expect the 159 pages of text to be devoted to prophecies of medical miracles, but Dr Schwartz offers much more than that. His thoughtful speculations about the future of medicine come after a trenchant review of the last half century of spectacular metamorphosis in medical therapy and delivery systems. That background enables readers, especially those just becoming interested in health policy, to follow him logically from past to future.
