All practices in occupational and environmental medicine are not equal.

In recognition of that characteristic of its members' work, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) has issued its first inventory of competencies in 26 categories of occupational medicine. Because the knowledge base of physicians who manage occupational injuries and fitness for duty issues may differ substantially from those who consult on environmental concerns, the college devised its list as a comprehensive "menu" of competencies rather than a universal core.
