A follow-up investigation of a 2012 outbreak of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) infection at 3 US rodent-breeding facilities showed that infected mice from 1 of the facilities were distributed to more than 500 pet stores, breeders, or zoos in 21 states. Thousands of people may have been exposed to LCMV via the infected mice, but investigators weren’t able to detect additional infections beyond the 31 employees at the facilities who were identified in the initial investigation.
