In preparation for certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in 1982, Maxcy-Rosenau Public Health and Preventive Medicine, edited by Last, was considered a must read. I was overwhelmed at how marvelous a tome the 10th edition was and read it twice. The text captured everything in the world of preventive medicine that my occupational health residency and four years of medical school did not and reinforced my decision to pursue preventive medicine as a subspecialty. Professionals in public health and preventive medicine can be assured that the 14th edition doesn't disappoint.
