A World Health Organization advisory group is recommending that all national immunization programs routinely vaccinate young children against rotavirus infection, which causes 500 000 deaths due to diarrheal disease and 2 million hospitalizations each year (http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2009/rotavirus_vaccines_20090605/en/index.html). The agency also said that introduction of the vaccine “is strongly recommended” in countries where deaths due to diarrheal disease account for at least 10% of deaths among children younger than 5 years.
