Dense fog on the dark drive after work
blurs traffic lights to soft green globes
floating out of nowhere, hanging
above blind intersections signaling
the go-ahead, my safe passage home.
I trust them like a trail of crumbs,
a beaded thread to guide me
through this near-miss maze, and trust
those other drivers all to stop
as their respective crimsons flare.
And this is how it goes from block to block
in second gear, alert for every greeny glow,
each a gate into the next small segment
of my brief journey, and the next,
and the next, and the next.
