On December 22/29, 1999, JAMA Medical News & Perspectives included thoughts for the future from NIH directors. Here are the views of two additional institutes.
Twenty years from now, we'll understand the genetic basis of single-gene inherited diseases. In addition, we will know the genetic basis for the more common, complex genetic disorders diabetes mellitus types 1 and 2 and obesity. We'll be able to stem the tide of overweight and obesity in the United States by applying new approaches to prevention and treatment of these disorders. While our efforts to bolster translational, clinical, and behavioral research will be successful, the ethical, legal, and social implications of genetic discoveries will continue to pose challenges.
