A panel of international experts has emphasized the important role health care professionals play in identifying high-risk alcohol consumption by their patients.

"All levels of the health care system should be involved in the management, including rehabilitation, of problem drinkers and dependent individuals," the experts wrote in a recently released document, The Geneva Partnership: Toward a Global Charter. Authors of the report also support strengthening the health sector's efforts through collaboration with employers, law enforcement agencies, volunteer groups, and others. More research is needed to help health care professionals better understand patterns of alcohol consumption and relationships among alcohol, health, and society, the report notes.
