Joint guidelines on providing optimal care to the more than 20 million children who visit emergency departments each year have been published by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In the April issue of Annals of Emergency Medicine, "Care of Children in the Emergency Department: Guidelines for Preparedness" outlines current requirements for equipment, staff, and policies to provide high-quality medical care for children. The guidelines, which represent the collaboration and support of 18 national organizations involved in caring for children, are available to all emergency departments.
