Twenty years, and already a sixth edition: "the Kelley" has become the standard American textbook of rheumatology, even though its original senior editor, now part of the title, no longer participates in that role (though he is still an author). By changing a proportion of the contributors each time, and adding and subtracting subjects, the editors assure that Kelley's Textbook of Rheumatology will be as current and up to date as possible, given the time it takes to receive and edit manuscripts and bring them to print. In that aim, they succeed admirably, and this textbook appears as contemporary as articles in journals that arrive weekly or monthly. While still scanting the history of the discipline, the editors bestride the field like a colossus.
