Steeped all day in sun
the dull brick grinds
in mortared rows
slow and wasting
as the shelves of earth
wrenching at their faults
or the fevered spine
strung too tight,
and now the heat
seeps and sighs
into the night
so ghostly dim,
the crumpled sheet cast off,
the wicking sheet that clings.
