Screening for Asymptomatic Coronary Artery Disease in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

JAMA. 2009;302(7):735-737. doi:10.1001/jama.2009.1189

To the Editor: Dr Young and colleagues1 reported on cardiac outcomes in patients with diabetes after screening with MPI. The article did not include information regarding the radiation dose given to the patients in the screening group.

A recent study by Hausleiter et al2 underscored complacence with the issue of radiation dose. Radiation dose is cumulative, and over years patients with cardiac disease may be exposed not only to radiation from computed tomography but also to nuclear medicine examinations, coronary angiography/angioplasty, and electrophysiology procedures, which can increase lifetime risk of cancer.3 Unfortunately, even in contemporary studies radiation dose is not routinely reported.
