The first edition of this now famous text was edited by Sidney C. Werner in 1955. The text was designed for use both in the clinic and in the basic science laboratory. In the preface to the first edition, Dr Werner wrote of his purpose and the choice of multiple contributors as follows:

The ability of any one individual to follow progress in all directions at once has all but vanished. As a consequence, marked subspecialization of interest has developed and advances have come to depend upon the interchange of information among many specialists, each providing his own orientation.
