President Obama has tapped the scientist who spearheaded the Human Genome Project, Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, to direct the National Institutes of Health.
Collins also directed the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) between 1993 and 2008, a period during which the agency contributed to the successful completion of the Human Genome Project, as well as several other “big science” efforts such as the International HapMap Project (http://www.genome.gov/10001688).
