Citing poor results from a phase 2 study, the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) announced that it will not pursue a widely anticipated phase 3 study of two AIDS vaccines. The trial was to have been a three-armed study to test Aventis Pasteur's ALVAC-HIV and VaxGen's AIDSVAX B/B alone and in combination. (The HVTN, funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, cooperates with pharmaceutical firms and nonprofit organizations in clinical testing of HIV vaccines via a global research network.)
