Although this textbook is published in the United States, a large number of the contributors are British. It includes almost all fields of surgery, eg transplantation, rather than being limited to those classically thought of in the United States as "general surgery."

For medical students Surgery is more a reference book than a textbook. Case reviews at the end of each section and at the end of the book are an exception. The editors state in the preface that "the book is aimed at the general surgeon." Students and junior residents will have difficulty using it.
