Applied Pathology for Ophthalmic Microsurgeons

JAMA. 2009;302(10):1117-1120. doi:10.1001/jama.2009.1305

This text is truly unique among textbooks of ophthalmic pathology. It attempts to bridge the disciplines of ophthalmic surgery, ophthalmic anatomy, and ophthalmic histopathology. The editors are Gottfried O. H. Naumann, Leonard Holbach, and Friedrich E. Kruse. Naumann is a world renowned ophthalmic pathologist known for his comprehensive textbook Pathology of the Eye. In the preface, the editors describe the motivation behind developing this text:

In view of all the glittering advances of biotechnology, the details of critical anatomy [and] morphology are too often neglected or forgotten although they are essential for the success of our microsurgical manipulations. . . . This book. . . attempts to remind the ophthalmic microsurgeon that knowledge of the minutiae of structures is a prerequisite to achieving the intended [surgical] outcome.
