In Reply: As we noted in our article, CIBA-Geigy became Novartis on March 7, 1996, and the industry documents on the marketing of Habitrol were dated earlier. The tobacco industry documents released in the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement contain relatively little information on JT. We thank Dr Kawane for sharing the example regarding JT. His letter points out that conflicts of interest resulting from corporate diversification and financial ties among tobacco and other companies are a global problem.
