Community hospitals in the United States billed more for coronary atherosclerosis ($26.2 billion) than for any other condition in 1999. Nearly 3.5% of all hospitalizations, or 1.2 million, were for coronary atherosclerosis, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project.
