Doctors in the Making: Memoirs and Medical Education

JAMA. 2009;302(12):1343-1347. doi:10.1001/jama.2009.1396

Doctors in the Making: Memoirs and Medical Education uses student and physician narratives to offer a critical appraisal of past, present, and future challenges associated with medical education. Sorting through more than 40 books, diaries, and blogs, author Suzanne Poirier skillfully weaves excerpts of these memoirs into a thoughtful discussion of how physicians are trained. Poirier writes that “There are two components of medicine and its practice: the scientific and the emotional.” The latter is explored throughout Doctors in the Making.
