Marketing and the HPV Vaccine

To the Editor: The campaign by Merck to promote Gardasil has arguably done a disservice to the HPV vaccine. The marketing strategies, as pointed out in the Special Communication by Drs Rothman and Rothman,1 have served as a tool for opponents to discredit the vaccine and have overshadowed its potential benefits. Moreover, by creating the false perception that every girl has an equal risk of cervical cancer, the Merck marketing campaign has systematically ignored those bearing the highest burden of the disease: women of disadvantaged social groups.
