There are many exceptionally good textbooks of pediatric medicine available, and new titles in that field should have a unique perspective and approach to justify their publication. The purpose of the American Academy of Pediatrics Textbook of Pediatric Care, as stated in the foreword, is to provide “information for physicians who care for children, no matter the setting, with an emphasis on the medical home as the ideal,” recognizing that practitioners caring for children do so in many disparate and varied practice settings and community types—which necessarily leads these practitioners to demand many things from a book that aspires to serve as a primary reference source for pediatricians, family physicians, and nurse practitioners.
