Morphology is the basis of diagnosis in hematologic and lymphoid malignancies. It is the morphologic review from which a differential diagnosis evolves and from which the physician will order the required molecular biological and other tests to confirm the diagnosis. Diagnosis in hematology and lymphoid malignancies, however, is becoming increasingly complex, because newer molecular biological techniques have been developed and are now being incorporated into the classification of disease.
