To the Editor: In their randomized controlled trial, Dr Meyhoff and colleagues1 reported that administration of 80% oxygen compared with 30% oxygen during and for 2 hours after abdominal surgery did not result in a difference in risk of surgical site infection. This conclusion conflicts with those reported in previous large studies,2- 5 a difference that might reflect unrecognized confounding.
