Even though she was in excruciating pain, she still looked regal. Her rich, chocolate complexion was devoid of wrinkles, with the exception of tiny crow’s-feet that burst like sunbeams from the corners of her eyes each time she smiled. Several rounds of chemotherapy had robbed her of what was probably a mane of thick and coarse white hair, but not her dignity. The scarce, silvery curls that were atop her head now resembled soft pieces of lint. Her brave smile was occasionally interrupted by a grimace; she was in pain.
