Decline in Student Obesity Rate Linked With School-Based Program

JAMA. 2014;311(14):1390. doi:10.1001/jama.2014.3140

A school-based program focused on healthy eating and physical activity was linked with a significant decrease in obesity rates among middle and high school students in King County, Washington.

The finding is based on data collected during 2004 to 2012 for the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey. Public health researchers analyzed height and weight data for students in grades 8, 10, and 12 to compare obesity trends in King County with the rest of the state.
