Medicare Fraud

JAMA. 2010;303(18):1801. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.568

Sen Chuck Grassley (R, Iowa) is asking the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) why it is not aggressively pursuing credible leads regarding fraudulent pharmacies bilking Medicare.

In an April 5 letter to DHHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Grassley, who is the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, said a private insurer had approached his office over concerns of a lack of responsiveness to its credible evidence that certain phantom pharmacies were defrauding Medicare (http://grassley.senate.gov/about/upload/Medicare-fraud-4-5-10-letter-to-HHS-Secretary-about-phantom-pharmacies.pdf).
