Surgeon General’s Prevention Priorities Dovetail With Health Care Reform Law

Regina Benjamin, MD, MBA, is no stranger to storms brewing overhead. Her rural Alabama primary care clinic has been devastated by hurricanes and fire. Her confirmation as US Surgeon General last year was held up for weeks, caught in the middle of partisan politics. When she took office last fall as the nation's top physician, Congress was mired in a battle over health care reform legislation. The country was gripped with uncertainties about the severity of the 2009 influenza A(H1N1) virus pandemic.
