Alok Bhargava is a pioneer in efforts to break down the existing firewalls between the biomedical and social sciences and between the health profession and the food system. As illustrated in this book, appropriate action for diagnosing and solving problems requires multidisciplinary approaches.

Chapter 1 provides a conceptual overview of diet-related health issues and the role of food and nutrition policies. Using an econometric framework, chapters 2 and 3 provide an empirical analysis of the demand for food and nutrients and the related health outcomes, with emphasis on developing countries.
