The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is opening its Clinical Center in Bethesda to outside researchers.
The NIH will fund 10 outside research teams with up to $500 000 per year and allow direct access to the Clinical Center’s unique resources. The center is solely devoted to medical research, and 10 000 new research participants—both healthy volunteers and patients—are seen there each year. The center has 1500 studies in progress, including many that track the progression of rare diseases. Specialists from multiple disciplines are based there, so patients can consolidate all necessary tests and assessments into short visits.
