Early Physician Follow-up and 30-Day Readmission Among Older Patients With Heart Failure—Reply

JAMA. 2010;304(7):743-744. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.1148

In Reply: Dr Wexler stresses the importance of family physicians in the health care system. We agree that family physicians meet a great need in the US health care system and that primary care physicians in general should play a central role in transitional care.

Although this was not stated in the article, our analysis combined family physicians and general internists in a single category because the distinction of interest in the study was whether cardiology care differed from nonspecialty care. We found no differences in 30-day readmission whether a generalist or a cardiologist provided the follow-up care.
