The preface of Pulmonary Manifestations of Pediatric Disease reminds the reader that board certification in pediatric pulmonology is a recent development; the field was established as a subspecialty by the American Board of Pediatrics in 1985. This is especially striking in the context of a textbook published only 25 years later that reveals the prominence of pulmonary manifestations within every organ system. The editors, Nelson Turcios and Robert Fink, indicate that the amount of research and new findings overwhelms the capacity to master the field, which is especially challenging given that respiratory conditions are the most common reason for pediatric hospital admissions.
