Arterial Hyperoxia and In-Hospital Mortality After Resuscitation From Cardiac Arrest

JAMA. 2010;304(13):1440-1441. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.1396

To the Editor: In their cohort study, Dr Kilgannon and colleagues1 reported that arterial hyperoxia was independently associated with increased in-hospital mortality compared with either normoxia or hypoxia. The authors suggested that the deleterious effects of hyperoxia may be due to excess free radical production. As another possible explanation, we would add hemodynamic compromise,25 which may be induced at least in part by oxidant stress.3
