Critically Ill Patients and Long-term Acute Care Hospitals

JAMA. 2010;304(13):1441-1443. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.1399

To the Editor: The article by Dr Kahn and colleagues1 purported to demonstrate significant issues in the utilization of services provided by long-term acute care hospitals. The cited data sources, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) files, however, contain neither the clinical nuances nor a reasonable control group necessary to accurately evaluate how long-term care hospitals can benefit appropriate patients and reduce costs for the health care system as a whole.
