HIV Professionals Under Attack

JAMA. 2010;304(15):1659. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.1452

Prompted by the incarceration of a 62-year-old physician working in the Ukraine to prevent HIV infection by providing opioid substitution therapy (OST) for injecting drug users, the International AIDS Society (IAS) issued a call for ending “the harassment, intimidation and imprisonment of HIV professionals” (http://www.iasociety.org/Default.aspx?pageId=422).

The physician, Illya Podolyan, MD, was detained on May 28 and charged with alleged crimes related to drug trafficking, the IAS said. OST is effective in reducing HIV transmission in HIV epidemics driven primarily by injecting drug use, as in the Ukraine.
