In 1985, I used the third edition of this text to study for my geriatrics board examinations. The first edition had been published 12 years earlier (when I was but a mere second-year medical student) and featured only 39 chapters and 44 authors—with most contributions coming from the United Kingdom. By 1985, the then-current edition, while larger—52 chapters and 60 authors—was still UK-centric, with 44 contributors from the United Kingdom and only 7 from the United States and 3 from Canada.
