Severe Flu Season in California

JAMA. 2014;311(18):1849. doi:10.1001/jama.2014.3529

California’s 2013-2014 flu season resulted in the most deaths and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions since pandemic influenza A(H1N1) circulated in 2009, according to a recent analysis.

The California Department of Public Health reported 94 deaths and 311 ICU admissions among patients with a positive influenza test result between September 29, 2013, and January 18, 2014. Of those 405 cases, 66% were among patients aged 41 to 64 years. About 10% of the patients hospitalized were younger than age 18 years, the lowest rate among children since the 2009 pandemic (Ayscue P et al. MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2014;63[7]:143-147).
