Treating Mental Health Disorders

JAMA. 2010;304(19):2116. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.1670

New treatment guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) aim to improve the care for people with untreated mental, neurological, and substance abuse disorders. The document (available at http://www.who.int/mental_health/mhgap) provides succinct evidence-based guidelines, presented as flow charts to facilitate delivery of care in primary care settings.

The WHO estimates that more than 75% of people with mental, neurological, and substance abuse disorders living in developing countries lack care for these conditions. In 2008, the WHO launched the mental health Gap Action Programme to address this problem and to facilitate delivery of care in nonspecialized health care settings.
