Elective Intra-aortic Balloon Pump Placement in High-Risk Percutaneous Coronary Intervention

JAMA. 2010;304(20):2240-2242. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.1698

To the Editor: The main finding of the clinical trial by Dr Perera and colleagues1 was that in high-risk PCI, prophylactic IABP placement did not reduce 28-day MACCE. Although patients undergoing elective IABP placement experienced fewer procedural complications, rates of access complications and minor bleeding were higher. These findings are consistent with our meta-analysis of IABP treatment in acute myocardial infarction.2
