NCI Travel Questioned

JAMA. 2010;304(22):2471. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.1753

Sen Chuck Grassley (R, Iowa), the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, is probing travel by National Cancer Institute (NCI) employees to meetings and conferences that is paid for by companies and other sources. Grassley is also wondering why the director of the NCI's Office of Ethics was disciplined and transferred out of the NCI after she had questioned the institute's sponsored travel policies.

In an October 22 letter to Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, director of the National Institutes of Health, and NCI director Harold E. Varmus, MD, Grassley sought details of the NCI employees' sponsored travel and asked the institute to conduct an internal review of whether it has given all required information to the US Office of Government Ethics (http://tiny.cc/h7h96).
