Radioactive Risk?

JAMA. 2010;304(22):2471. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.1755

Rep Ed Markey (D, Mass), chairman of the Energy and Environment Subcommittee, wants the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NCR) to revise its regulations to require hospitalization of patients after treatments involving high doses of radionuclides to avoid the possibility of exposing the public to dangerous levels of radiation.

In an October 20 letter to Greg Jaczko, PhD, NCR chairman, Markey cited the results from a survey (conducted by his subcommittee) of 1000 thyroid cancer survivors that indicated many were treated with high doses of radioactive iodine on an outpatient basis and released to return home or to stay at a motel, potentially exposing others to high levels of radiation (http://tiny.cc /v5qwi).
