Water and Sanitation Needs

JAMA. 2010;304(23):2582. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.1800

Members of the health community are urgently needed to address global issues of hygiene, sanitation, and water supply (HSW), according to a new series of articles on water and sanitation policy. The introductory article to the series noted that globally, 1.1 billion individuals habitually defecate in the open, and 884 million people live in households in which water is collected from distant, unprotected sources (Bartram J and Cairncross S. PLoS Med. 2010;7[11]:e1000367).
