This splendid work marks the completion of Dr Rutkow's Herculean task, which, since 1988, has produced four unique masterworks. The first two are bibliographic works: History of Surgery in the United States, 1775-1900, Vol I: Textbooks, Monographs, and Treatises (Norman Bibliography Series, No. 2) and Vol II: The Periodical & Pamphlet Literature (Norman Bibliography Series, No. 5). Surgery: An Illustrated History (Mosby, 1993) is an international illustrated history of surgical progress from primitive times into the 20th century.
