The Ride With A Snap, Venice, CaliforniaKarl Yens

JAMA. 2014;312(2):114-115. doi:10.1001/jama.2013.279601

The blended bouquet of cotton candy and popcorn wafting in from the midway beckons one onward to the other-worldly experience of a carnival. Some thrill-seeking souls head for more extreme amusement rides that churn the stomach and douse those below in a shower of pocket change. For young children, a gentle canter on showily painted carousel horses undulating to the rhythm of reedy tunes may suffice for high adventure. The whirling rides are perhaps emblematic of the carefree joy and freedom of summer in America.
