A bipartisan agreement reached by Sen Bernie Sanders (I, Vt) and Sen John McCain (R, Ariz) would give authority to the acting Veterans Affairs (VA) chief to fire senior officials immediately and to allow veterans who have experienced long waits or who live 40 miles or more from a VA facility to seek care with private physicians at other facilities. The legislation would also create a task force charged with reviewing the VA’s scheduling needs (http://1.usa.gov/1oa1ero). Similar legislation passed the House in May.
