By a vote of 78 to 17, with only Republicans casting votes in opposition, the Senate has confirmed Sylvia Mathews Burwell’s nomination as Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services (http://1.usa.gov/1gdEY5m).
The confirmation of Burwell, who served as the White House’s budget director for the past year, represents a shift for the health agency, which has been headed by former state governors for the past 14 years. Burwell will be responsible for expanding coverage through the new health care law, among other duties.
