In research that may help explain the link between the use of statins and an increased risk for type 2 diabetes, investigators from McMaster University, in Ontario, Canada, have discovered that the drugs activate an immune response pathway that interferes with insulin signaling (Henrikbo BD et al. Diabetes. doi:10.2337/db13-1398 [published online June 10, 2014]).
Experiments in mice revealed that several different statins activate a multiprotein complex—called the NLRP3/caspase-1 inflammasome—known to promote inflammation and insulin resistance.
