A beverage made from broccoli sprouts may enhance the detoxication of some airborne pollutants among residents living an area of China with high levels of air pollutants, according to a study by researchers from US and Chinese institutions (Egner PA et al. Cancer Prev Res. doi:10.1158/1940-6207.CAPR-14-0103 [published online June 9, 2014]).
The broccoli sprout beverage provides sulforaphane, a plant compound that acts in part by inducing enzymes that contribute to detoxication and has been shown to have anticancer properties in animals. The researchers enrolled 291 healthy participants from Quidong, a rural area in the Yangtze River Delta region of China undergoing rapid industrialization. In a 12-week randomized clinical trial, the participants consumed daily either a beverage containing freeze-dried broccoli sprout powder mixed with water, pineapple juice, and lime juice or a placebo beverage containing all these ingredients minus the broccoli sprout powder.
