President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill designed to overhaul the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical system. It allocates $10 billion in emergency spending over 3 years to pay private physicians and other health care professionals to care for qualifying veterans who live far from VA hospitals or clinics or who cannot get timely appointments at one; $5 billion to hire more VA physicians, nurses, and other medical staff; and $1.3 billion to open 27 new VA clinics across the country (http://1.usa.gov/1uDv4aK).
